Act Two - Scene Three

(Jamilah and Diana in the hostel)

Jamilah

You ask why I loved him

I loved him for his eyes

Brimful of love

Blinded with tears

For my tragic fate

I loved him for

The common things we share or denied

I compared his solitary soul

To men indifferent to fair or foul

To love false or true

He has not the mania

Of owning things

Nor the ambition of shallow wits

Dreams of joys not yet attained

           Nor intoxicated with vainglory

           To bring the world

           Under law and rule

Waiting impatiently

For a new dawn

I loved his smile

Innocent as a child

His front full of ripe opinions

He dislikes trumpeters

Who drum dissention

Supporting one group

Against another

I loved him for his heart's pride

Never to bow to oppression

Or cede to pressure

I loved him for his faith

His truth, his openness

His fervor, his equity

I found with him stability

He gave me more than liberty

The love for liberty

I wanted so fondly

To repeat his example

In my children

The chain for eternal existence

For immortality

Diana

I fall in love with the gallant grace

Who danced with me in Delphic space

Do you remember the masquerade

Held by the university to the graduates?

Music was intolerable

Weirdly as if in dreams

Ecstatic waters sighed for love

Every thing was agreeable

To stir the senses to impossible

(back-drop of the stage to restore the atmosphere of Jita cavern)

Diana

Amid the choir of love

He murmured to me

"I knew you Queen of beauty

You cannot hide

Your eyes green pierced my heart

That I never forget

These eyes I distinguish

From thousand eyes

Your laurel crown

Is meant for me

Your sweet eyes

Are meant for me

Something sweet I felt

As if hyptonized

When he grasped my hand

Welded by flame

To the touch of his palm

To Delphic oracle we swam

Jamilah

To Delphic oracle!

Diana

The boat was happy

By his crazy hands

When unmasked me, unmasked his face

The prophetess of Delphy assured us

My Zodiac and his harmonize

I was created for him, he for me

But the roaring water told me

That I fell in love from the first glance

My heard ceded

To him to monopolize

I feared to sink deeply in his love

To drown in translucent dream

He was anonyme to me

But his love was a tempest

That I never knew before

The spirit of Ashtar

Was hovering over the place

Her perfume was piercing

The incense like foam

Entered my cells, my heart's core

Who are you? I said trembling

You'll know me soon

When you accept to marry me

I' ll come to you in your dreams

You're created to follow me

Your fancies will seek my arms

My love my caresses

I'm lucky to find at last

A woman worthy of my love

I knew him soon

No body was his peer

The gallant grace of my dreams

Was a revolutionist

My sect called him terrorist

Conspiring with the enemy

To flee him, to annihilate

How can my family accept him

How can his people accept me

When their chorus similirate us

To Delila and Samson?

Jamilah

I knew the man

He is a friend to my fiancé

They went together to the show

When you were crowned

The Queen of beauty

Diana

Really! I wondered how he knew me

When I did not know him before

But tell me dear Jamilah

Is your fiancé

The man whom you danced with

In the Masquerade

Who wore the suit and casque

Of Napoleon Ponapart?

Jamilah

No that man I knew at once

From the tone of his voice

Familiar to me

He was the poet, our professor

Who is as old as my father

Under the mask he could hide

No one to recognize him

Or discriminate

I wish to visit him in his village

To pay him for the lessons he gave me

Do you like to accompany me?

Diana

Yes Jamilah, I wish that

 With all my heart
