Act Two - Scene Five

(Jamilah and Diana in the Hostel)

Diana

When are you leaving?

Jamilah

I shall not leave

I told my brother not to come

My wings were broken on the rocks of life

I suffered much

My people suffered more

Diana

Will you not accompany me

To the birthday of our friend Souad?

Jamilah

I have no right for joy, nor time

To meet people sharp of tongues

I want to challenge powers

Drowned in sin

How can I do that

Without virtue

How can I do that without honor?

My reputation is dear to me

Diana

Perhaps you don't want to meet

Our professor Dr. Peter?

Jamilah

Perhaps!

He says he created me

Nobody created me

I created myself

With him, without him,

If I were in prison, if I were in asylum,

If I were in a palace, or in camps

My talent will radiate

Send beams of a sunny day

Life alone is my teacher,

I observe well, remember well

I have a heart inside me

Which doesn't accept

Injustice or tyranny

Or slavery to any one

In my life I curb desires

That enslave my body

But when true love comes

I shall not disobey

I'll choose a man

Who craves

For the evolution of man

When I bare my heart to him

I find a friend not an enemy

A man who shares me all my dreams

My longing, my nostalgia

To my home, to children born from me

To compensate my beloved whom I lost

Diana

I have chosen my man

We are soon to marry
