Act Three - Scene Two

(In a party bureau. The president with a journalist)

Journalist

I want an answer

A clear answer

Why did not your party

Share in the Lebanese war?

President

Because we don't want to be

A strange body in Arab community

To succeed, we should be friends

To all parties, to contradicting powers

Our land must be receptive

To all organizations, to all ideas

We don't want to take a stand

Or adopt an attitude

We don't want to make

The first step when we act

The war between us is still in glare

We have a duty to defend our people

To save our land from those who instigate flame

Bring instability, terror and shame

Journalist

You were panting for peace

Have you canceled your obligations

Nullified your promises all?

Do you want us to do the dirty deeds

Without reward from you or help?

President

It's for your interest

For your benefit you're doing the deed

Journalist

It's a common weal

We give you our power to rule

Perhaps for fifty years to rule

President

We can't rule by democracy

If we paid the bill soon

Lebanon is proud of its inborn democracy

You ruin by that our credibility

In a land where religions, sects

Parties, nationalities are contending

Never Lebanon in collision for power

Will find peace and stability

Journalist (to himself)

He is a maneuverer this man

Promised to help us by igniting the spark

In Beirut, now he's breaking his promise (he leaves)

(meeting of the president's son Basheer, Heig, and Sharon)

Sharon

We have over passed the forty km.

Promised to end our task

Basheer

We can do nothing by that,

Even to announce our government

Sharon

Saida for example

Basheer

This will not do

Sharon

Where are the sites you want us to reach?

Basheer

(pointing to a place on a map of Beirut)

Here!

This the school I studied in

If you reached this place

We can move

The spark will inflame

If you reached the school

Ba'abda Castle is near

Of your help we can avail

Otherwise no advantage we impose

Our success is doubtful, I suppose

Things would turn against us soon

Sharon (to himself)

This man in his thirty's

Full of the vainglory of youth

Thinks he is the only one

Who can rule Lebanon

(bloody battles on Damascus-Beirut road. Sharon and Heig leave)

Our men are doing their task well

Heig

What do you mean?

Sharon

They cleared the way to Beirut

Our planes will find no more obstacles

From Syrian missiles or air planes

(some of the party's members ask to enter and share in the national salvation council)

Chorus

If you want to share

In ruining Beirut

It means the division of Lebanon

Announce yourself a Christian commander

On a Christian region

But if you want to be

The president of all the republic

You should not fire a shot

On your capital Beirut

Syrian missiles from Lebanon were withdrawn

Syrian planes were bombarded in the Bikaa

Their tanks were destroyed

On both sides of Damascus road

Israel army is besieging Beirut
