Act Three Scene Four |
Act Three - Scene Four (Diana and Ali) Diana How can I be near you? With such roaring tide With tongues' various cries Don't stir, stand apart How can I be happy? Threatened to be kidnapped Away from you. Ali Nobody can do you harm As long as I'm alive I shall defy the whole world For your sake Beloved Diana Diana How much I hope, how much I fear That my ethereal bliss Will be cut by something near Our stars can't hug or repose By hatred of those who interfere In pleasures we have known together Don't leave me my husband dear I am besieged by shameless men Who call my love to you a shame Who follows me every where Holding a net for me to snare I sense fear Scanning the windows Lest somebody outside Unveils his malice to you or me Sometimes I think It's madness to defy Community But how could I taste Such a divine sense If I was sane If I heeded much society? Oh my love! Every morning I pray to God To keep for me my happiness And tranquility But my family will never forgive I raveled my life out of reach Incautious to desecrate my identity Even my mother doesn't dare To visit me Ali There is a mission From me required dear I must go abroad Diana Where? For how long? Ali I'm not permitted to say where Safety is the daughter of secrecy To be cautious is the leader's diplomacy Diana I need you beloved to be near I'm fruitful of your seed Ali (hugging her) Is it true! It's divine music I hear But beloved I can't be always near I'm a man making friends with danger That my child will live in peace and power In my absence Let Jamilah be with you She's a good friend Her husband too You'll not feel estranged together While round the house Are secret guards To help you in errands For security too Diana Ah1 unquiet wanderer Ali Beloved Diana, I'm not wandering for pleasure The great gloom before a tempest Warns with evil coming soon The enemy will never leave us live We're threatened by annihilation When we ask for our salvation Beirut with us too Violence is creeping to their homes Panting for vengeance from our nation Diana (weeps) Take me with you Away from the hell of Beirut Ali If my errand succeed I'll never leave you alone Do you think it self-delight? To leave the loveliest woman born For a month, for a week, for a second Diana I'm imprisoned here Surrounded by enemies Even my mother is my enemy I'm bound to you, our fate is to be Always together Ali I'm bound to a cause It's shame to be laggard Ahmad is Lebanese Bound to our cause Do you think when violence storm He'll be near Jamilah Seeking safety and self pleasure! How could I be? Chorus To avoid assassination Never be a boastful man Never flirt with a woman In whatever ideal she believed You'll never know a friend from a foe Never be in a place Where people expect you Or know your location Leader You'll be my representative In international conference Where our cause is discussed Where you have many Influential friends To Lisbon I shall send you To attend the conference there Chorus Don't roam alone In deserted roads To be a target to an ambush But the gallant grace Never adhered To advices Out of misguided pride In the plane he flirted with a woman Who knew his way to the conference She intrigued him by her honeyed tongue He boasted of his mission She applauded his ideals In Lisbon he roamed with her Deserted roads He was alone surrounded by no group To assist, no one to warn, no one to defend In the conference he was barred By the enemy to defend his cause Death found the time, the hit-man The weapon to carry out the crime On a defenseless man From behind he came as ever To slaughter the man With a silent revolver |
